How to check for rectus abdominis separation

Before starting your belly binding treatment, our massage therapists will teach you how to measure the separation of your rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis recti).

But sometimes, we still receive inquiries from mothers who are unsure of how to measure the gap on their own.

So here are some tips on how you can check for rectus abdominis separation at home:

  1. First, lie down and bend your knees. Position your feet flat on the ground, and place your fingers above the navel

  2. Slowly raise your upper body, similar to how you would when doing sit-ups

  3. Feel the space between the rectus abdominis on both sides with your fingers. If you can fit in more than two fingers, there is a separation in your rectus abdominis muscles

Diastasis recti puts pressure on the mother's lumbar spine, resulting in lower back pain and discomfort.

It can also lead to bladder issues such as urinary leakage and incontinence.

Also, if exercises are done before repairing the rectus abdominis, you run the risk of worsening your diastasis recti.

Hence, it is very important to repair the rectus abdominis after childbirth.

Belly binding still works several years after childbirth and even after multiple births. Our highest record is a mother who was 18 years postpartum!

We have done many postpartum repair cases for mothers over the years and our certified massage therapists are here to put your mind at ease.

In addition to repairing diastasis recti, belly binding also helps to strengthen the uterus, and repair the enlarged pelvis and sternum after childbirth.
